Major Milestone as Type 26 Bow Unit Departs APCL Cammell Laird.

16 Mar 2026
APCL Cammell Laird has achieved a further milestone in the Type 26 block build programme as it successfully completes HMS Birmingham’s Bow Unit.

APCL Group was awarded contracts by BAE Systems in to build units for the Royal Navy’s Type 26 Frigates in 2023. The advanced anti-submarine warfare vessels are being constructed at BAE Systems’ site in Govan, Scotland, but will incorporate units built by both APCL A&P Tyne and APCL Cammell Laird.

The Type 26 Frigates are designed for anti-submarine warfare and will replace the Type 23, with the first due to enter service later this decade.

The bow block steel was cut on the 6th of August 2024 and is now complete, consisting of 12 units varying in size and weight.

APCL Cammell Laird has also fitted and welded over 8,000 hot work items (secondary steel seats, pipework) as well as major lockout equipment.

APCL Cammell Laird is proud that multiple trade apprentices have gained valuable experience working on the bow block throughout its duration - all working alongside SQEP tradespeople.

At the peak of the programme, a team of over 100 white and blue collar APCL employees worked across the programme.
